International Lawyer: ‘The choreography is some of the best I've ever seen’

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Five-millennia-old authentic Chinese culture presented seamlessly on stage impressed Mr. and Mrs. Bartel at this afternoon’s Shen Yun performance.

“It’s very artistic. I love it—very elegant. You see the Chinese tradition coming through the dance and the music. But yet it’s modern, it’s connecting to the modern audience. I think it’s doing a great job at conveying the culture to us, in the west. It’s enjoyable,” commented Mr. Bartel during intermission.

As Chair of law firm Bullivant Houser Bailey’s Corporate Finance & International Transactions practice, Mr. Bartel has both studied Chinese history and been exposed to Chinese culture.

“I’m constantly exposed to their culture and I think that they’re doing a good job of the historic culture of China,” he said.

Shen Yun, the world’s premier Chinese dance and music company, presents classical Chinese dance as well as ethnic and folk dance pieces, all accompanied by original scores from the Shen Yun Orchestra, which uniquely combines Chinese instruments with classical western instruments.

“It’s enjoyable. The music is great,” Mr. Bartel commented. “The dancing—the choreography is some of the best I’ve ever seen. With that many people on stage and all of the movements—it’s very elegant.”

Mr. Bartel also mentioned that Shen Yun does a great job conveying the essence of traditional Chinese culture on stage by fitting it with the orchestral accompaniment and pageantry of today.

“It’s really transitioning between the cultures. I think it’s just well-done. I don’t think you can really do the old traditional, really historical dances on stage and it wasn’t made for stage. It has to be choreographed, it has to have music. And so it is really getting the real spirit across,” commented Mr. Bartel.

Mrs. Bartel, dressed beautifully for the occasion, noticed the handmade costumes of the Shen Yun performers.

“I like the last one—especially the shoes. I’ve never seen this shoe type before,” said Mrs. Bartel referring to costuming designed uniquely for each piece of the performance to fit the rich culture and themes expressed.

She thought the performance enjoyable, commenting, “I like the colors and the choreography … I like it. It’s really nice,” Mrs. Bartel concluded.
